DifüzyonDiffusion
Bir fikir bir topluma nasıl yayılırHow an idea spreads through a society
Drop a bead of ink into a glass of water. Even if no one stirs it, the ink slowly spreads everywhere; from where it is densest toward where it is sparsest, of its own accord. This is called diffusion. There is no pushing hand; only the random motion of molecules and a gradient: a silent flow from many toward few. Ideas, habits, even a sense of justice usually spread through a society this way.
Flow born of a gradient
The secret of diffusion is simple: if there is a difference, there is a flow. Ink passes from where it is dense to where it is sparse, until everywhere is equalised. A legal principle too concentrates in a court's ruling, then spreads downward from there — to similar cases, to ordinary contracts, to everyday intuitions. Custom is often born this way: a behaviour beginning in one place seeps outward wherever it finds a gradient.
An idea spreads not by command but by gradient: it seeps from where it is dense to where it is lacking. One must not force it, but create the difference.
The membrane and permeability
But it does not spread everywhere at the same speed. A membrane intervenes: it flows where the membrane is permeable and accumulates where it is not. In a society too, a new idea of a right seeps quickly into some circles while hitting a wall in others. Legality is a kind of controlled membrane: it regulates what passes and what waits, filtering diffusion through the sieve of law. Adjusting permeability is the only legitimate way to govern spread.
Toward equilibrium, but slowly
Diffusion looks inevitable — sooner or later the ink reaches everywhere. But it is slow; and that slowness is sometimes hope, sometimes cruelty. Justice reaching the farthest corner of a society is such a diffusion: it seeps even if no one stirs, but it can take generations. What speeds the work is the stirring hand — a defending lawyer, an insistent case, an injustice that refuses to go unseen.
To look at a glass of water and watch the ink spread is to learn patience. But one must not forget: while nature waits to be stirred, the human is the only molecule that can do the stirring.
