Geri beslemeFeedback

Çıktının girdiyi beslediği döngüThe loop where output feeds the input

Bring a microphone too close to its own speaker: first a faint hum, then an ear-splitting shriek. The system is taking its own output back as input; each round amplifies the sound, and the growing sound amplifies the next round further. This is called feedback. A loop feeding itself — and this is the secret of both destruction and balance.

Positive and negative

Feedback has two kinds. Positive feedback magnifies a tendency: the rich grow richer, the debtor more indebted, the strong stronger. Like the resonance in which a small force accumulates, as the loop feeds itself the deviation grows vast. Negative feedback works the opposite way: the system senses the deviation and pulls it back — like a thermostat, keeping balance. A society's health depends on which loops grow and which are reined in.

To understand a system is not to count its forces but to see which loops feed themselves. Injustice is often not a single decision but a self-amplifying loop.

Self-amplifying injustice

Law's most insidious problems are positive feedback loops. Whoever has money gets good defence, good defence wins, winning brings more resources — the inequality of arms feeds itself. A person once branded cannot find work, and unable to find work draws nearer to crime again, which reinforces the brand. In these loops no one alone makes a "wicked" decision; the system carries itself toward the cliff in small steps.

Breaking the loop

The good news: feedback loops can be broken. Adding a negative loop — an element of balance — silences the shriek. The deterrent force field, legal aid, the oversight of a higher court; all are thermostats that sense a deviation and pull it back. What matters is not hunting individual wrongdoers but seeing which loop feeds itself and placing a resistance in its path.

Perhaps a mature law thinks not in events but in loops: not content to correct an injustice, it makes it its business to break the link amplifying that injustice. Because you can silence a single shriek; but if the loop keeps turning, the next shriek is already on its way.
