Bir eşiğin altında hiçbir şey olmaz: salınan bir nötron soğurulur, tepki söner, madde sessizce durur. Ama kritik kütleyi aşınca her tepki bir yenisini tetikler — zincirleme başlar, ve sessiz madde bir anda patlar. Toplumsal ve hukuki değişimlerin çoğu tam böyle davranır.
Yıllarca hiçbir şey, sonra her şey
Bir haksızlık yıllarca tek tek şikâyetlerle dile gelir; her biri soğurulur, hiçbir şey değişmez. Sonra bir gün eşik aşılır ve aniden çığ başlar: bir hareket, bir içtihat dalgası, bir reform. Yakıt hep oradaydı — birikmiş şikâyetler, sessiz öfke — ama kritik kütleye ulaşana dek atıl durdu. Aynı madde, eşiğin altında ölü, üstünde diri.
Aynı yakıt, kritik kütlenin altında sessiz durur, üstünde zincirleme patlar. Toplumsal değişim de böyledir: yıllarca hiçbir şey, sonra birden her şey.
Sessizliği istikrar sanmak
Buradan tehlikeli bir yanılgı doğar: kritik-altı dönemin sessizliğini istikrar sanmak. "Bak, her şey yolunda, kimse ses çıkarmıyor" — oysa basınç görünmeden birikiyor olabilir. Nötronlar hâlâ salınıyor, sadece henüz zincir kapanmadı. Bir toplumda hiçbir şeyin değişmiyor görünmesi, hiçbir şeyin birikmediği anlamına gelmez; çoğu zaman tam tersi.
Zinciri başlatan tek olay
Ve bazen tek bir olay — doğru anda, doğru yerde — zinciri başlatan nötron olur. Tek bir dava, tek bir görüntü, tek bir karar, yıllardır atıl duran yakıtı tutuşturabilir. Tarihe sonradan bakınca değişim "aniden" olmuş gibi görünür; oysa çoğu zaman sessizce ulaşılmış bir kritik kütlenin patlamasıdır.

Below a threshold nothing happens: a released neutron is absorbed, the reaction dies out, the matter sits quietly. But once critical mass is crossed, each reaction triggers another — a chain begins, and the silent matter suddenly explodes. Most social and legal changes behave exactly like this.
Years of nothing, then everything
An injustice is voiced for years through individual complaints; each is absorbed, nothing changes. Then one day the threshold is crossed and an avalanche begins: a movement, a wave of jurisprudence, a reform. The fuel was always there — accumulated grievances, silent anger — but stayed inert until critical mass. The same matter: dead below the threshold, alive above it.
The same fuel sits silent below critical mass and explodes in a chain above it. Social change is like this too: years of nothing, then suddenly everything.
Mistaking silence for stability
From here springs a dangerous error: mistaking the quiet of the sub-critical period for stability. "Look, all is well, no one is objecting" — when pressure may be building unseen. Neutrons are still being released; the chain simply hasn't closed yet. That nothing seems to change in a society does not mean nothing is accumulating; often the opposite.
The single event that starts the chain
And sometimes a single event — at the right moment, in the right place — becomes the neutron that starts the chain. A single case, a single image, a single ruling can ignite fuel that has lain inert for years. Looking back, change appears to have happened "suddenly"; but it is usually the explosion of a critical mass quietly reached.
The threshold was a continuous quantity turning into a sharp line; critical mass is something turning into an avalanche by feeding itself. Both teach the same lesson: the calm on the surface conceals the accumulation in the depths. The wise know how to read the silence.
