Faz geçişiPhase transition

Su bir anda neden buz olurWhy water becomes ice all at once

Faz geçişinin dersi şudur: değişim her zaman kademeli hissedilmez.

Cool water slowly. For a while nothing happens — it just gets a little colder. Then, right at zero degrees, suddenly something entirely different happens: the liquid turns solid. A small, continuous change (temperature) leads, at a certain threshold, to a qualitative, sudden transformation. In physics this is called a phase transition — and the change of societies, institutions, even law, is often like this.

When quantity turns into quality

The lesson of a phase transition is this: change is not always felt gradually. Often there is a long period of "nothing is happening," then at a threshold everything suddenly rearranges. In critical mass, accumulation brings the explosion; in a phase transition, accumulation changes matter's whole order all at once. An injustice counted as "normal" for years in a society can, while nothing visibly changes, become one day suddenly intolerable.

Change often does not look gradual: a long silence, then at a threshold everything rearranging at once. Like water becoming ice, the sense of a right can solidify in an instant.

Latent heat

The strange part: as water freezes at zero, it keeps giving off heat yet its temperature does not fall. This is "latent heat" — energy rebuilding matter's inner order without changing its temperature. Social transformations have such a phase too: from outside it looks as if nothing is advancing, while inside the order is being quietly rewoven. The impatient eye mistakes this for stagnation; in truth the transition has already begun.

Nucleation

A phase transition does not begin everywhere at once; it spreads from a nucleus — a speck of dust, a scratch, a small disorder. The first ice crystal forms somewhere, then grows fast. Social change too has such nuclei: a case, an objection, a "no." Even custom is often a crystal growing from a single nucleus. What begins at a single point can, under the right conditions, transform the whole liquid.

Perhaps hope is hidden in the very nature of the phase transition: that long cooling in which you think nothing is changing is in fact an approach to the threshold. And once the threshold is crossed, change is not slow but sudden.
